Why Are We Still Here?
We are finally living in a post-Roe v. Wade world! It is a privilege to see this day, knowing that so many have prayed for it for almost 50 years!
The decision of the US Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, the decision that legalized abortion in 1973, has given rise to some questions:
- Is abortion illegal now?
- Have women lost their “right” to abortion?
- What does it mean for pro-life organizations and for pro-abortion organizations?
The overturning of Roe did not make abortion illegal. It means that the right to regulate abortion was returned to the states, where legislation will be enacted in each state. Many states still recognize a “right” for women to end the life of their pre-born baby, and have even extended the limits that were allowed by Roe. This includes abortion by any method, at any point in the pregnancy, for any reason. Praise the Lord, Missouri stands for LIFE! But also know that women can cross state lines and still have an abortion. Pro-life organizations continue their vital work of saving lives, but if abortion is less available, pregnancy centers have new opportunities to reach abortion-minded people with compassionate help. Prenatal care, infant and child care, parenting classes, adoption referrals, and abstinence classes are ways that we can help families who make a decision for life.
Our mission remains the same post-Roe: to stop as many women as we can from choosing to end the life of their baby, while still offering help and hope to families who choose life, whether through parenting or adoption.
So what does this look like for Choices Pregnancy Center? To answer that I will quote our 2022 banquet speaker:
"We were here before Roe was overturned and we will be here after Roe is overturned."—Jor-El Godsey, President, Heartbeat International.
Moms and Dads still need love and support when facing an unexpected pregnancy. Through our mentors they will find the compassion and life-affirming support they need. In our Mommy Market they will find the resources they need to meet their physical needs. And through prayer they will find the strength that only God can give to bring this new life into the world.
We live in exciting times!
